AlTtrix−Al−CNT Nano−Composite

AlTrix is an aluminum based nano composite powder with enhanced conductivity and hardness. This aluminum matrix composite is reinforced with carbon nano tubes and demonstrates 40% better electrical conductivity than comparable aluminum. AlTrix may be drawn into wire or used in sheet form. AlTrix is produced with IAP’s patented technique to uniformly disperse carbon nano tubes into an aluminum metal matrix. The composite powders are then 1) pressed into a billet, 2) sintered 3) the billet is rolled or drawn into sheets or wires aligning the nano tubes. Typical nano tubes are 1−20 nm in diameter with aspect ratios greater than 1000. The current carrying capacity of Carbon Nano tubes are approximately 1000 times greater than copper so the addition of a small percentage creates disproportionate improvements in conductivity.

As received carbon nano tubes are randomly oriented as shown in the micrograph on the left. The cross section on the right shows the alignment and distribution of the carbon nano tubes after processing in aluminum powder matrix.

Applications for AlTrix include electrical and thermal conductors.
