What is Electromagnetic Forming?

Electromagnetic (EM) forming uses the power of high intensity magnetic fields to form metals and powders into net shape components. This process can be used to perform the following operations:

  • Metal forming (sheet and tubes)
  • Joining / Assembling
  • Net shape powder compaction

Examples of EM forming applications.

Examples of net shape precision parts.

As shown in this photo, EM forming applications include:

  • Transmission gears for the automotive industry
  • Ignition cores for electronic ignition systems
  • Permanent magnets and motor housings
  • Other ceramic and composite parts

What is the MPTC?

IAP's MPTC--Magnetic Processing Technology Center--conducts process feasibility studies and project planning, as well as develops parts and prototype production processes for various industrial applications that can benefit from magnetic pressing processes.
